the ghost of christmas past

I've been reading this week about guitarist Joe Satriani's complaints that Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is a rip off of his own "If I Could Fly" (the YouTube evidence seems to find pretty conclusively in Satriani's favour).

Hunting out some more Christmas songs today, I'm struck by the similarity between Darlene Love's (rather too upbeat) "All Alone This Christmas", viz.

...and this slower, gloomier and generally more profane offering from Caledonian Flavours-of-the-Month Glasvegas:

Are they by any chance related?

Ha ha ha! How on earth did you spot that?

Everytime I hear Glasvegas, I am completely and utterly underwhelmed. I think I must be missing something here.

No I agree. I bought their album because I'd read lots of good things about it but on the first couple of playings it seems massively over-rated. They really only seem to have a couple of ideas music wise, based on guitarry feedback and tunes which are Phil Spector rip-offs. We'll see if the hype lasts into next year!
